July 2012 Update - The Mount

This month we thought we would show you some pictures relating to Rayleigh Mount, site

of the Castle built by Suen (Sweyne) circa 1070 and mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

In 1394 Richard II gave permission for his tenant’s in Rayleigh to use the stones from the

Castle for their own purposes. Some were probably used for Holy Trinity Church Tower

& some for improvements at Hadleigh Castle.

Now a peaceful oasis owned by  the National Trust.  Open all year and available to all for walks.
